The founder of Fo Guang Shan, Venerable Master Hsing Yun said, ”Adorn the monastery with wisdom.” Fo Guang Shan’s CNY lantern festival Dharma services integrates the wisdom and strength of BLIA members, monastics and devotees. By presenting the traditional techniques of making lanterns, lanterns of peace filled with blessings are created. The public not only light up the lamps, but also purify their hearts, adding peace and tranquility to their souls.

The lamps of brightness and lamps of peace in Buddhism are just like having light to acquire warmth, heat and illumination. Thus, there are lamps of peace on the first day of the first lunar month every year. In ordinary days, there are lamps of brightness. Some parents light up lamps for their children, hoping that they will be intelligent and well-behaved; There are children that light up lamps for their parents, wishing for their good health; There are some who light up lamps for themselves, hoping for smooth-sailing future; There are also people who light up lamps for the world, praying for world peace and people’s happiness.

Venerable Master Hsing Yun once said,” The Buddha resembles the light. Light can pierce through darkness, give warmth, transform raw to maturity. Similarly, Buddha’s light can break through the darkness of greed, hatred, ignorance, affliction and defilements, warm our minds, perfect our life, personality, future. In this way, all merits will be accomplished.” By lighting the lamps, we hope to light up a lamp of peace for the world, so that countries can live in peace with one another and races can be harmonious and share the friendship of love.
